Several things to keep in mind when training your dog!

To be able to use positive reinforcement you should praise and reward your puppy when he does something right and give him little or no notice at all when he does something bad. Yelling or scolding him when he does something wrong will only end up confusing him and it will not help your training efforts.

For the duration of training you will need to repeat things over and over again, however, after your dog is trained he will seldom require additional instructions. He will be well behaved and compliant and easy to take in public, which is what any conscientious pet owner really wants.

When you are housetraining your puppy you need to shower him with love and attention when he does it correctly. Make a huge deal about it and reward and applaud him generously. Soon he will always go where he is intended to because it pleases you so much.

You simply must prove yourself as the "leader of the pack" or the "alpha dog" immediately with your puppy. Dogs are pack animals and they closely follow a chain of command within the pack. Also, most dogs will try to assume the dominant role if they can and that can be exceptionally disadvantageous to the training of your puppy. So it is vital to establish the pack hierarchy with you as the alpha from the very start.

Spaying or neutering your dog is not only an excellent way to avoid litters of puppies, but it is positive for your dog's health. Also, it will reduce many aggression complications and you will have fewer behavior difficulties.

Normally try to keep your dog training sessions short enough so that you are both still having fun. Some dogs understand quicker than others and you will need to accept and respect your dogs own character and personality in order to the get the greatest results with training. If you value him and keep it fun, your dog will try harder to satisfy you and you will be more prone to have the connection you want.

Training your dog will lead to a healthier, happier pet and a more pleasing rapport with your dog. Your puppy will know how to behave and you will also know how you can control the conduct of your dog as well. Your dog will be safer and more content and so will you.

To be able to keep your puppy's attention you can do things that he enjoys but you must also reward him for small successes. Do not offer a food reward every time, however, because sporadic reinforcement is actually much more efficient than constant reinforcement because he never realizes when he will get the treat so he will keep doing the behavior on the hope that he will get the food reward. Also too many food treats can be bad for your dog's health and weight. However, love and attention should be consistently given.

A dog will do anything to satisfy you but he needs to clearly recognize what you want. You must be the established "alpha dog" and you must be firm and patient and always follow through. It will not take too long if you are consistent. Your pet dog will work hard to satisfy you if he obviously comprehends what is expected of him.

Pups are genuinely curious and they will sniff around the area, dig and play around. Puppies are also easily distracted by noises, other people and other animals. When you first begin training it is smart to do it where there are fewer distractions and as your training progresses you can steadily move to places with more possible distractions. - 32404
